COMING OUT IN CHURCH
Saturday, June 11, 2016 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pmFree
On June 11, from 9 am to 12 pm, the Justice and Peace Council of Christ Church Cathedral will host its fifth Coming Out in Church conversation in Sanders Hall. In spite of dramatic changes in the political climate in recent years and increased protections for the LGBT community, many LGBT individuals struggle with experiences of marginalization within the contexts of church and family. We are witnesses to the devastating truth of this in our own community because studies show that a disproportionate percentage of homeless teens in Houston are LGBT. The Coming Out in Church program strives to create a safe space for conversation about the experiences and struggles of LGBT individuals and their families and friends.
Our panelists will set the stage for conversation. This time, we welcome The Very Rev. Barkley Thompson, Dean of Christ Church Cathedral; Sara Fernandez, Chair of the Board of Directors for the Association for Family and Community Integrity; and Ellis Montes, author of the blog Openly Episcopalian, musician, and member of La Iglesia Episcopal San Mateo. Spanish speakers are welcome, and every effort will be made to facilitate conversation in both languages. Whether you are a member of the LGBT community, a family member or friend of an LGBT individual, or someone who simply wants to ensure that our church communities are places of grace and reconciliation for all people, your voice matters. This program is free and open to the public, and childcare and a light breakfast will be provided.
