Please join us for a collective, choral reading of “Antígona González” (Les Figues Press, 2016) with author Sara Uribe and Houston-based women artists, writers, activists, and organizers. The reading will be in Spanish, with John Pluecker’s translations projected in English.

Longlisted for the 2017 Best Translated Book Award for poetry, “Antígona González” tells the story of one woman’s search for the body of her brother who was disappeared in the midst of the on-going state and non-state violence associated with the war against drug trafficking in Mexico. The book interweaves this horrific narrative with those of other Antigones from across history: from Sophocles to Griselda Gambaro’s “Antígona furiosa,” Leopoldo Marechal’s “Antígona Vélez,” María Zambrano’s “La tumba de Antígona,” and Judith Butler’s “Antigone’s Claim.”

La lectura será en español, pero se proyectarán las traducciones al inglés de John Pluecker.

Preseleccionado para el Premio al Mejor Libro Traducido en EEUU del 2017, Antígona González cuenta la historia de una mujer que busca el cuerpo de su hermano desaparecido en medio de la violencia estatal y no estatal asociada con la guerra contra el narcotráfico en México. El libro intercala este terrible relato con los de otras Antígonas a lo largo de la historia: desde Sófocles a la Antígona furiosa de Griselda Gambaro, la Antígona Vélez de Leopoldo Marechal, La tumba de Antígona de María Zambrano y Antigone’s Claim de Judith Butler.
