What happens when a dastardly villain cons a widow into turning over the deed to her ranch?

“It’s definitely worth watching the show to find out,” Jeannine Cole, producer of Old West Melodrama, said. “You can get a ringside seat to a night of adventure.”

The local theatre company is setting the stage for its next family friendly dinner show. “A Penny Saved” opens on Friday, Aug. 5 and performances continue Friday and Saturday evenings through Saturday, Aug. 27.

The show will be held at Puffabelly’s Depot Restaurant, located at 100 Main Street in Old Town Spring, with dinner and a pre-show starting at 7 p.m. The melodrama begins at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $18 for the first row, $17 for the second row, $15 for general admission or $13 for children and seniors. Dinner is not included in the price of tickets. Dining is required.

“It’s an interactive dinner theatre experience,” Cole said. “There’s plenty of excitement, sprinkled with comedy. Everyone will have a great time.”

Attendees are invited to get involved – to boo the villain Fouberie Blackguard and root for the Widow Rootstock.

“Pretty soon, the Rootstock daughters intervene, and Penny swipes and hides the deed,” Cole said. “Blackguard will try every trick in the book to get it back.”

All the while, Deputy Dewey Dauntly is busy rescuing Biddy, the Rootstock’s maid, from snakes, horses, bees and even chickens.

The play was written by Denise K. Buhr and is being produced by a special arrangement with Pioneer Drama Service Inc. in Englewood, Colorado.

Old West Melodrama is the only performing group in the greater Houston area that offers melodramas and murder mystery dinner shows year round. The troupe, founded by Joe Cole, is comprised of experienced actors and performers who enjoy interacting with the audience.
