tlmd_court_gavel_generic_lawHARTFORD, Conn. — Lawyers for a 16-year-old transgender girl detained in Connecticut say she’s being forced to wear male clothing and staff members keep calling her by her male birth name.

The new allegations come in a revised federal lawsuit filed Monday. The girl, known only in court documents as Jane Doe, is suing state child welfare and prison officials, alleging her isolation at a detention center for boys in Middletown violates her constitutional rights.

A state Department of Children and Families didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. The agency runs the detention center.

The revised lawsuit also says agency staff offered to house Doe with the general male population, but she fears being assaulted and harassed.

The case has drawn national attention by civil liberties advocates.
