SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah activist says Salt Lake City’s two major outdoor advertising companies have refused to carry a billboard that reads “God Loves Gays.”

Mark Lawrence of Restoring our Humanity says representatives from Reagan Outdoor Advertising and Yesco called the subject matter too controversial.

KUTV reports Lawrence is still looking for spots for the billboards, but says they may end up in more out-of-the-way locations.

The billboard design comes from an Internet artist who calls himself “God” and has been attempting to put up similar signs around the country.

Lawrence was a key player in the lawsuit that struck down Utah’s ban on gay marriage. The state is appealing that decision.

The two billboard companies couldn’t immediately be reached for comment by the Associated Press.
