Before Summer

Before Summer is a collection of short stories detailing the coming out and coming of age of a young man in the 1940s and ’50s. Lach MacLennan starts out with a hopeful glimpse of a life—very different from the small-town Iowa life he leads—through his beloved aunt Letha, a woman who dared to go to Chicago and enter the university. He travels from his talks with her to an Army base in New York during World War II, then back to Iowa, and finally to a life anticipated and as yet unknown. These beautifully crafted stories are a perfect, but not fluffy, summer read. CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform (amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com). —Angel Curtis
