Fitzhugh: Win Not Likely In Gubernatorial Bid

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP)–House Minority Leader Craig Fitzhugh is mulling a gubernatorial bid in 2014, but the Ripley Democrat says it’s not because he believes he can defeat Republican Gov. Bill Haslam.

Fitzhugh tells The Knoxville News Sentinel that he would want to run an “issues” campaign designed not to harm other candidates running for offices around the state.

The Democrats’ U.S. Senate nominee this year was part-time flooring installer Mark Clayton, whom the party immediately disavowed upon his primary victory for what they deemed extreme anti-gay views. Clayton was trounced by incumbent Republican Sen. Bob Corker last month.

Fitzhugh said he will wait as long as possible to make up his mind on a gubernatorial bid in order to avoid a long campaign.
