AUGUSTA, Maine (AP)—The leading PAC opposed to Maine’s gay marriage referendum raised nearly $1 million in October, with most of the money coming from the National Organization for Marriage.
In its latest financial report, Protect Marriage Maine says it raised $950,000 from Oct. 1-23. That pushed its overall fundraising to $1.4 million.
The Kennebec Journal reports that of the $950,000, $800,000 came from the National Organization for Marriage, a national anti-gay-marriage group. The Knights of Columbus gave $100,000.
Mainers United for Marriage, which is leading the campaign in favor of the Nov. 6 ballot question asking Mainers if they want to legalize same-sex marriage, says it brought in $964,000 from Oct. 1-23.
Mainers United has raised about $4.3 million overall.
