Calendar: Author Patricia Cornwell Visits Houston

Patricia Cornwell, probably best known for her popular series of novels featuring medical examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta, visits Houston on Thursday, October 18, to promote the publication of her new book, The Bone Bed.

Cornwell married Staci Ann Gruber in 2005. In a 2007 interview with the UK’s Telegraph, Cornwell said, “I’ve never been a soapbox person for gay rights, but now I’m in a same-sex marriage I tend to be more open, because I am outraged that it should be illegal in other states. If we were outside of Massachusetts and Staci were in a horrible car wreck, a hospital could forbid me from seeing her. The federal government does not honor same-sex marriage, so couples can’t file joint tax returns and, in terms of death benefits, people have to go to extraordinary lengths with lawyers to try to make sure that their partner isn’t evicted from the home.”

Murder by the Book presents the evening of a talk, a Q&A, and a book signing. Tickets are $35 and include a copy of The Bone Bed and customer parking ($7 companion tickets are available for couples). The evening begins at 7 p.m. in the Greenway Ballroom of the Renaissance Houston Greenway Plaza Hotel, 6 Greenway Plaza East.
