We Were Here
First it was the gay plague, then GRID (gay-related immune disease), then HIV. Whatever it happens to be called at any given moment during its unblinking sweep of destruction, AIDS is and likely will be forever associated with gay men. In a documentary The New York Times called “one of the top 10 films of the year,” filmmaker David Weissman takes us to the streets of San Francisco, circa the early ’80s, when a strange gay cancer was making its way through the gay community, and how that gay community stepped up to care for its own when no one else would. Mary Louise Parker (Weeds, Fried Green Tomatoes) hosts the documentary, the season opener for PBS’s acclaimed Independent Lens series. We Were Here airs June 14 at 9 p.m. on PBS (pbshouston.org). —Nancy Ford
