Big Brother and The Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin
Live at The Carousel Ballroom 1968
Dripping with hippie history, this short-lived venue situated in the heart of San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district in the ’60s was the nest of Stanley Owsley, aka the Johnny Appleseed of Acid. Owsley was responsible for sound design at The Carousel, capturing Joplin and Big Brother in an early concert prior to her defection to the Kosmic Blues Band. Includes gut-ripping, raw, live renditions of “Piece of My Heart,” “Summertime,” “Down on Me,” and—hang onto something stable—a nine-plus minute “Ball & Chain.” Columbia /Legacy (sonymusic.com). —Nancy Ford
