Making the Boys

It was a double-edged sword. True, Mart Crowley’s 1970 stage play-turned-feature film, The Boys in the Band, shed important new light on the lives, loves, and razor-sharp wit that is often the trademark of gay men, but it also unveiled the albatross of pathos that often accompanied that community, even prior to the emergence of HIV. Luminaries Edward Albee, Dominick Dunne, William Friedkin (the original film’s director), Crowley himself, and others discuss its impact in this nostalgic doc. Crayton Robey directs. 2011. First Run Features (firstrunfeatures.com). —Preview: Nancy Ford
