Candidates Challenged on Gay Rights

By BETH FOUHY

CONCORD, New Hampshire – The Republican presidential candidates are being challenged on gay rights.

In a nationally televised debate Sunday, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney was queried on comments he made in 1994 saying he would be a voice for gay rights in the Republican Party.

Romney stood by those words, saying he did not discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation and that a member of his cabinet had been gay.

Romney says he has never supported same-sex marriage.

Rival Rick Santorum says he believes in respect and dignity for all people but reiterated his opposition to gay marriage and adoptions by gay parents.

The former senator from Pennsylvania is an outspoken social conservative and has made opposition to abortion and gay marriage central to his campaign.
