RI Prof. Authors Book on Gay Youth Struggles

KINGSTON, R.I. – A University of Rhode Island professor has co-authored a book that tells the stories of gay and lesbian youth who have struggled with discrimination.

The book by Prof. Annemarie Vaccaro is based on research involving more than 100 students who recounted their experiences as gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth from kindergarten through college.

A 2009 survey found that 85 percent of gay and lesbian youth have faced bullying at school. Vaccaro says she hopes the book will help children, schools and parents create more open, welcoming communities.

Other co-authors of the book, titled “Safe Spaces,” are Rhode Island College faculty member Gerri August and Westfield State University Prof. Megan Kennedy.
