PORTLAND, Ore. – Oregon Republicans say they’ve taken anti-gay language out of their 2012 party platform as they try to shift toward the political center.
The Oregonian newspaper says party members at a meeting in Bend narrowly approved the amendment last weekend. The change removes language opposing civil unions and adoption of children by same-sex couples.
One supporter of the change says the old language denigrates the lifestyles and rights of gays and lesbians.
Party spokesman Greg Leo says the next election campaign will focus on economic issues, and the party does not want social issues to be a distraction.
Leo says language supporting marriage as between one man and one woman remains intact in the platform, and that’s consistent with the state constitution.
