LGBT Toilet at Rio Samba Group Praised, Criticized

RIO DE JANEIRO – There are now three toilet options for revelers at Cidade de Deus shantytown’s samba headquarters: his, hers and LGBT.

The president of the Rio samba group says the third option was added at the request of its transgendered members. Roberto dos Santos says women didn’t like transgenders using their bathroom, but they faced threats if they used the men’s.

The group’s carnival director, Carlos da Silva, hails the new option made available this week. He says people of all sexual orientations are more comfortable this way.

But the head of an LGBT rights group, Marco Prado, says prejudice against transgenders should be openly discussed instead of avoided by creating a separate bathroom.
