DES MOINES, Iowa – Child care employees at a Waukee church have to sign a “lifestyle” agreement as a condition of employment.
The Des Moines Register reported that 22 teachers at Happy Time Daycare and Preschool at Point of Grace church were told last week they have to sign the agreement and reapply to work at the church’s new Children’s Academy, which will replace the daycare and preschool.
The Rev. Jeff Mullen says the agreement is intended to enhance the spiritual and academic experience of children and families. Employees also will be required to attend church regularly.
The agreement identifies unacceptable behavior, such as having sex outside of marriage, engaging in homosexual conduct, viewing pornography and drinking alcohol.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa says the church’s rules appear to be legal.
