Cops: NC Man Arrested After Anti-Gay Attack

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Asheville police say they investigating an attack on a man outside a grocery store as a hate crime.

Police said 25-year-old Lamon Hopkins hurled anti-gay slurs at a man last week then punched him in the face, breaking bones.

Hopkins was arrested and charged with felony assault inflicting serious injury.

The victim says the officer who responded did not immediately file a report, and police are investigating why that happened.

The victim says he is not gay and does not know why Hopkins decided to attack him.

Hopkins was released on bail. A phone listing for him could not be found.
