Storm Stories
Plays commemorate Hurricane Ike’s second anniversary

It was a dark and stormy night—actually, among the darkest and stormiest nights ever recorded on the Gulf Coast. Remembering those inclement, terrifying weeks that were Hurricane Ike, Thunderclap Productions presents The Great Storm, 10 new short plays—some comedies, some dramas—revealing backstories commemorating the two-year anniversary of the storm.

Aron Alon, author of the title piece and co-founder of Thunderclap Productions, which is presenting the plays, calls residents of Galveston “a community of survivors.”

“The common thread through most of the plays is the question of how all these various individuals—rather successfully or not—will survive and redefine themselves in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike,” the playwright says.

Different directors and casts for nearly every play convey “the individuality and uniqueness of each piece and the different stories that we’re trying to tell,” says playwright Eric James, one of Thunderclap Productions’ co-founder. James is the author of Night 4, one of the plays in the production and the only one that is cast and written with two openly gay characters.

“With nothing else to do in the aftermath of a hurricane, a gay couple is forced to examine their relationship and themselves,” James explains his play. “Was the force of the hurricane enough to break down more than just physical barriers?”

James’ short play, Into the Storm, is also on The Great Storm’s roster. Works by playwrights and Thunderclap Productions co-founders Leighza Walker and Peter Wittenberg Jr. complete the program.

Obsidian Art Space, 3522 White Oak Dr. Sept. 9–11, 16–18. Tickets are pay-what-you-can, with a suggested ticket price of $15. Adult language and situations. www.thunderclapproductions.com. —Nancy Ford
