Community Center Hosts Awareness, Art, and Exercise Events

By Nancy Ford

Preparing for its 15th anniversary in 2011, representatives of Houston’s GLBT Community Center say the Center is set to participate in the “Building Our Community from the Center” GLBT Center Awareness Day, a day of action organized by CenterLink, the national organization of LGBT centers. Locally, the Houston center will host an open-house reception Sept. 15, noon until 8 p.m., featuring HGLBTC programs and community partners.

“We invite everyone in the community to join us on September 15 as the Center partners with GLBT centers across the United States in this annual day of celebration,” Center president Tim Brookover said. Center board members, facilitators, and organizers of Center programs will be on hand at the open-house event. Guests are encouraged to sign up for the Center Volunteer League, the Center’s volunteer corps, and obtain information on Center programming, Brookover added.

That same evening, the Center also  holds an opening-night reception for an exhibition of LGBT-themed quilts created   by Mike Kelley.

Also in September, the Houston GLBT Community Center launches Project Empower, a new no-charge exercise program for people living with HIV. David Lewis, a personal trainer experienced in working with HIV issues, leads the exercise classes at the Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays at noon. Classes stress stretching and exercises that can be done at home without equipment, Lewis said.

“Project Empower seeks to increase wellness in people with HIV,” Lewis said. “I am glad to work with the Houston GLBT Community Center on this new program.”

Regarding exercise equipment for Project Empower, the Center welcomes donations of exercise bands, exercise balls, yoga mats, leg weights, and a stretch bar. 3400 Montrose Blvd., Suite 207 • http://www.houstonglbtcommunitycenter.org • 713/524-3818.
