Lawrence v. Texas Scholarship Established

The Houston GLBT Community Center has announced plans to award its first scholarship honoring the two men who were the petitioners for the landmark Lawrence v. Texas case. The case, which was heard in the U.S. Supreme Court, overturned antigay sodomy laws in the United States.

“We are honored to recognize John Lawrence and the late Tyrone Garner with this scholarship program,” says Tim Brookover, Center president. Without their willingness to fight a discriminatory law, the march toward equality would have been significantly slower.”

The scholarship will be awarded to a gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender high school senior planning to attend an accredited institution of higher learning who has demonstrated a commitment to public service, demonstrated leadership in the fight for equality for LGBT people, engaged in significant extracurricular activities, has a record of service in community organizations, and has a demonstrated financial need.

Brookover said the scholarship will be presented at its annual Pride month event in June commemorating the 2003 Supreme Court decision in the case.
