Dining Out for Life-Chewing for Charity.

Restaurants put their money where our mouths are with Dining Out for Life.

The New York Post recently called Houston “one of the most satisfying food scenes in the country.” Perhaps the Post should have added the word “generous” to that laudable appraisal.

In 2009, many of our city’s fine eateries helped raise more than $60,000 by participating in Dining Out for Life, AIDS Foundation Houston’s annual culinary event. Because of these restaurants’ generosity, nearly 5,000 HIV-positive men, women, and children received vital services provided by AFH, including housing, case management, and food assistance.

On Thursday, April 29, many of our city’s eateries swing open their doors once again for Dining Out for Life. Restaurants across Houston unite in the fight against HIV/AIDS by generously donating a chunk of their establishments’ food bills from that day. Donations range from a set dollar amount to 33 percent of the day’s breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner menus. Going above and beyond the gastronomic call of duty this year is Riva’s Italian Restaurant, which is contributing a full 100 percent of its customers’ food bills to the DOFL cause.

“The strong support of our community members and the incredible generosity of the restaurant owners create a winning combination for DOFL and AFH,” says AFH’s chief executive officer, Kelly McCann. “And this event provides a simple and delicious way to support health and social justice causes. Dine out, fight AIDS. It’s that easy.”

Sponsored by Fiesta and b4-u-eat.com, the epicurean event also offers diners a chance to win two round-trip airline tickets with the Dining Out for Life raffle. That’s even better than dinner and a movie.
