HIV-positive couple enters U.S. after travel ban is Lifted
Clemens Ruland and Hugo Bausch, an HIV-positive Dutch couple, successfully entered the United States on Jan. 7. Travel restrictions for HIV-positive people imposed during the Reagan administration were lifted by the Obama administration effective January 5, 2010.
“Travel restrictions on HIV-positive people fundamentally affect their human dignity,” said Boris Dittrich, advocacy director of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights program at Human Rights Watch, who met the couple upon their arrival at JFK Airport in New York City. “Lifting the HIV travel ban was a victory for human rights.” – by Nancy Ford
