A post-Ike festival gives Galveston Pride glam, sound, and fury

Hurricane Ike put a serious damper on the 2008 Galveston Island Pride Festival. When 2009 came around, organizers wanted to ensure the only excitement came from the festival and not Mother Nature’s wrath. So they asked music guru Joey Guerra to amp up the party volume to gale-force decibels. Guerra came through like a champ for the island, snagging four local favorites and a trio of national performers including former mall siren-turned-centerfold Tiffany, American Idol shoulda-been Kady Malloy, and America’s Got Talent Brittney Spearsinator Derrick Barry.

“It’s been a crazy time, but I’m beyond excited,” Guerra says. Guerra is such the seducer, he convinced all the entertainers to make cocktail appearances at the 3rd Coast kickoff party on the 23rd. They won’t be performing, but who knows what’ll happen if you get a few drinks into the celebrity squad. The festival will also feature Houston faves Toddicus as emcee and KRBE’s Special K as DJ. (Call 832/392-1361 for details.) While 3rd Coast and the Pink Dolphin are venues of choice for the events, the festival proper will take place at Saengerfest Park, 23rd and Strand. Galveston Pride is scheduled for October 24. Galvestonpride.org for details. —Steven Foster
