After Cuba-born Carlos’ mother dies in Miami, he relocates to Boston, where another Cuban, Miami native/newspaper reporter Tommy, befriends him. In alternating chapters, each relates a pleasant-enough slice-of-life tale that navigates their gay couplings throughout the Boston area: Carlos and a kept Brazilian boy, Tommy and his ex, a secretive alcoholic. Carlos’ mother also appears in his dreams that lead him to a hopefulness about his future. Diaz is an engaging author who also writes about pop culture for the Boston Globe. —Review: Donalevan Maines
