Representatives for the Lesbian and Gay Band Association, a network of American lesbian and gay bands, have announced an amalgam of its membership is scheduled to participate in the January 20 Inaugural Parade in Washington, D.C.

According to a December 10 statement issued by the Presidential Inaugural Committee, the group’s appearance marks the first time an openly gay group has been invited to participate in the Inaugural Parade.

“I am honored to invite these talented groups and individuals to participate in the Inaugural Parade,” said President-elect Barack Obama on his website. “These organizations embody the best of our nation’s history, diversity and commitment to service. Vice President-elect Biden and I are proud to have them join us in the parade.”

The marching contingent includes Kevin Taylor, Paige Kovar, and Casey Sherrell, three members of the Houston Pride Band.

Taylor, a board member for HPB, also performed for the two Clinton inaugurations, though positioned along the parade route. “We were towards the end of the parade, and the president, vice presidents, and their families were walking outside their limos. We played ‘America the Beautiful’; it was an overwhelming feeling of validation and just being a part of society.

“I know that this year actually marching in the parade will be even greater, and will be well worth the hours spent in the cold.” – Nancy Ford
