Live at Five

Revisiting the loony fifth season of The L Word.

By Nancy Ford

LThisThe pot-laced brownies . . . the crazy campfire scene . . . the cougars gone wild. . . . The 2008 season of Showtime’s The L Word returned an ample portion of whimsy to its considerable viewing base: nobody died alone in her hospital bed, nobody fell off the sobriety wagon, nobody got left at the altar. Good times!

Just in time for holiday stocking stuffing, Showtime keeps the happy flowing with The L Word: The Fifth Season, newly released on DVD.

TheLWordIf season five were to be the hit series’ last, as rumored, producers Ilene Chaiken and Rose Lam clearly wanted to go out big, adding meaty guest stars like Kelly McGillis (Top Gun), Jane Lynch (Role Models), and Cybill Shepherd (The Last Picture Show) to its already respected cast.

But, fortunately, fans were given a bit of good news in March when Showtime announced that a miniaturized, eight-episode season would bring denouement to the L.A. ladies’ “love! lust! laughs! and longing!” lesbians worldwide have grown so fond of emulating. A marathon viewing of this season-five package, revisiting Jennie’s over-the-top diva antics, Shane’s inability to keep it in her pants, Dawn DenboandherloverCindi, and more gets fans primed and prepared for season six’s January 4 debut.

The DVD set also contains behind-the-scenes footage of hon-est-to-god, real-life lesbians frolicking at the 2008 Wolfe Women’s Party in Tampa, as well as a music video from Leisha Hailey’s (Alice Pieszecki) musical duo, Uh Huh Her. Brazenly hoping to entice new lesbian viewers to its other series, Showtime also includes episodes from its other hit series, Californication, Dexter, and The Tudors in this package.
