WORD.
Writer and entertainer A.C. Coleman (on the right) welcomes poet Billie Simone at his “Jazz, Poetry & Art” event on September 28, 7-9 p.m., at Bering & James gallery. The Houston GLBT Community Center presents Coleman’s evening of spoken-word and music artistry, the third in a series. Coleman, who is completing a second music CD with his producing partner David Eduardo Flores Perez for their 2Osos label (Perez, a visual artist, also took this picture), is inviting other talent to perform. Interested persons may contact Coleman — who is also an occasional contributor to this magazine — at [email protected]. Donations accepted at the event will support the community center and its programming.

TRANSFORMATIVE NIGHT.
It’s an idea whose time has come. Joining the long list of pageants presented to raise funds for GLBT community endeavors, the first-ever Ms. Transgender Houston 2007 debuts on September 22. Activist and entrepreneur Vanity Wilde is the glamorous driving force behind this effort, which she intends to make an annual event. As with most pageants, contestants, who include Alison (on the right) and Charlene Rynee Lauderdale, will compete in presentation, talent, and evening wear categories before a panel of judges. The triumphant walk down the runway takes place at The Chateau at Midtown (1220 Taft). Proceeds from the pageant benefit The Diamond of Hope Society and the Houston TG Fund, two new fundraising groups that support local transgender causes. SWEETIE PIES
…and cakes and other tasty treats. It’s time once again for Decadent Desserts and More, the annual autumnal AssistHers tribute to all things (well, some things) edible. Decadent Desserts is the primary yearly fundraiser for the volunteer organization that provides in-home support and care for lesbians living with debilitating illness. The event introduces epicurean delights a la buffet from a number of restaurants and caterers, including Amanda’s Bakery, Jim Benton Catering, Rainbow Lodge, and others. It’s a perfect way to audition caterers for upcoming holiday celebrations. Kat Moon emcees the event, bolstered by a performance from the belly-rific Sisters of Avalon, raffle, and auction items, plus “more surprises to delight your senses,” extols leading AssistHers sister Sol Lara, pictured here with treats prepared by Carter & Cooley. The food fun begins at 4 p.m. on October 7 at South Beach. Tickets: www.assisthers.org.
