One Fine Day
In November, a Mexican festival comes to
life
Given
the heart-rending losses the community has suffered,
we think the Mexican festival of Dia de los Muertos
should be celebrated more by us all. On these
days in early November, families traditionally
honor their dead relatives and friends, who return
to earth to visit. Cemeteries get a sprucing up.
Aromas from meals favored by loved ones fill kitchens.
Ofrendas, or altars, adorned with clay
figures and treasures that recall the deceased
bring them to life, at least in memory. When Day
of the Dead is observed, the beloved are never
entirely lost. They are here, with us, embracing
all the follies of life, laughing with mouths
wide open. -TB
Shown: "Catrina" clay figure from Oaxaca. $88.
