| OH DAM! 10 YEARS OF DYKE
ACTION MACHINE!

Founded by Carrie Moyer and Sue Schaffner in 1991,
Dyke Action Machine! (DAM!) is a public art collaboration
which critiques mainstream culture by inserting
lesbian images into a recognizably commercial
context. For the past 10 years, the work of this
infamous duo has been a seamless part of New York
City's visual environment-orchestrating massive
poster campaigns that serve as a counter-narrative
to mainstream outdoor advertising. Oh DAM!
10 Years of Dyke Action Machine! brings
together a decade of work by Dyke Action Machine!
and presents us with a visual timeline of some
of the most hotly debated cultural issues of the
late 20th century. November 1-December 14 at DiverseWorks
(713/223-8346). -Troy Carrington
MAD ABOUT THE BOY
In drag-king persona Randy
ManDragon, Kat Zemanek, and back-up duo Glitterblue
(Stacy Lewis,) and Tes Joujoux (Gretchen Dube,)
will travel to Austin on November 16 to perform
in a show presented by Kings N Things, the drag-king
troupe in the capital city (www.kingsnthings.com).
The show, at the Elysium nightclub, will bring
visibility in Texas to a burgeoning performance
form with roots in the New York club-and-theater
scene of the '80s. Often dressed in hyper-guy
garb, drag kings blur the line between what's
considered masculine and feminine-and provide
a gay old time. Increasing the gender bending,
Zemanek, as ManDragon dressed in '40s-era hipster
guy drag, will perform to a track by RuPaul, a
man in glamour-queen drag. -Tim Brookover
