How
do small companies compete with the giant ones
and win big? A group of inner-loop specialists
led by Realtor Karen Derr has been able
to stay ahead of the curve through innovation,
quality service, and, especially, the Internet.
As a rash of e-real estate brokers came on the
Houston scene this year, Karen Derr and Associates
Realtors celebrated their fifth anniversary on
the web. In fact, on July 1, 1995, this local
real estate agency was the first in Houston to
go online with pictures of real estate listings.
Today their domains rival the sites of much larger
firms. KarenDerr.com's traffic and position on
many search engines has catapulted the smaller
firm into the coveted world of corporate relocations
by appealing directly to relocating executives.
Two offices of 20 agents are available to assist
homebuyers locate real estate or help market their
current one. Karen Derr Realtors can be reached
at 713/862-1600. What's new on the worldwide horizon
for Karen Derr? A new Internet site of course:
www.PeopleLovePorches.com.
"It's true," Karen says. "People do love porches."
After a 15-year residency in the Galleria area,
attorney James S. Walker has relocated his
law offices to 1924 Portsmouth in the Montrose area.
Walker has served the Houston community for almost
two decades, handling personal injury claims, criminal
law cases, as well other branches of legal expertise.
Walker has been a steadfast supporter of the gay
community through his involvement in numerous
charities, fundraisers, and community-planning
groups. Walker is looking forward to continuing
his involvement in the community at his new Montrose
location. He can be reached at 713/552-1117 or
800/732-2934. For more information on Walker's
services visit his website at www.WalkerTexasLawyer.com.
Early October will mark the opening of Montrose's
newest icehouse, Chulo's, conveniently located at
502 Elgin, corner of the Brazos/59 off-ramp exchange.
The establishment will feature an inviting atmosphere
and a rooftop view of downtown. Long-time community
member David Melina is the general manager.
The Fifth Annual Common Ground Co-ed Softball
Tournament, which will be held on October 14
at Memorial Park Fields 4 and 5, will benefit Camp
Hope, a camp for HIV-positive children. Please come
show your support. If you are interested in participating
or volunteering, please call 713/957-5192.
The month of October is officially "Listen to Your
Inner Critic Month." According to Dr. Joyce M.
Gayles, clinical psychologist, success coach,
and founder of the month-long experimental event,
"This month is set aside to explore and learn ways
to overcome the negativity of self-criticism."
Self-criticism is rampant in Western culture,
according to Dr. Gayles, and affects all facets
of life-from your sense of competence as a boss
to your trust in yourself as a lover. It dampens
creativity, affects corporate productivity, interferes
with effective communication between people, and
can lead to physical and emotional exhaustion
and depression.
Dr. Gayles will be speaking to business and professional
groups on the topic of mastering your self-critical
voice through a four-hour workshop on October
21. For a free handout on transforming your inner
critic and a workshop schedule, send a SASE to:
