THE SWEETEST THING
Shelly Drought, executive chef at Morgan’s
on Montrose—the re-named, casualized Redwood
Grill—will tempt the crowd at the October
5 AssistHers Decadent Dessert Extravaganza with
bourbon-laced bread pudding. In Drought’s
rendition of the Southern classic, flaky croissants
serve as the foundation, so the result is unexpectedly
light (which is not to imply low-cal, you weight-watching
readers) and less starchy than dear Aunt Ida’s
dense dish baked with stale loaf heels. At a tasting
after our photo shoot, even confirmed bread pudding-shunner
Ann Reed (pictured left) of AssistHers gave a
forks-up sign after a bite (Drought is pictured
center with Morgan’s general manager Wally
Swart at right; photo by David Lewis).
In addition to Morgan’s, 12 other restaurants
and caterers will serve desserts at the third
annual benefit for AssistHers, the volunteer group
that provides non-medical in-home care for lesbians
coping with critical illness. The contributors:
The Acadian Bakers, Bocados, Boca Chica, Carter
& Cooley, Crostini, DaCapo’s, don Carlos
Catering, Fabio’s Italian Bar & Grill,
Java Java Café, Jim Benton Catering, Mo
Mong, and Rainbow Lodge.
For a $25 tab ($20 in advance), you can graze
to your sweet tooth’s content at the 4–7
p.m. fundraiser at Meteor. Marsha Carlton and
Jerry Atwood will perform, which is always a treat.
