On the up side, the 25th-anniversary edition of
the GLBT Pride Parade on June 28 went off without
a trace of rain for a change. On the down side,
the protesters—no doubt emboldened by outrage
at the Supreme Court announcement two days prior—went
mobile this year, wandering through the staging
areas and along Westheimer. No matter. The drag
queens still preened, the musclemen flexed, the
plastic beads flew, the politicians waved. Nine
groups received awards:
Ruby Slipper
Greater Houston GLBT Chamber of Commerce
Gypsy Rose
Turtle Creek Chorale/The Strangerettes
Edison
Community Gospel Church
Houston
The Krewe of the Moons of Uranus
Rainbow Lights
Diageo (Smirnoff Twist)
Texas
JP Morgan Chase P.R.I.D.E. Team
Stonewall
Donald R. Watkins Memorial Foundation
Silver Celebration
Gulf Coast Archive & Museum of GLBT History,
Inc.
Spirit of Montrose
Turtle Creek Chorale/The Strangerettes
From the Department of Shameless Promotion: We
still have cotton T-shirts based on our “Pink
Sheep of the Family” parade entry. There
is also a companion shirt that reads “I
§ the Pink Sheep of the Family.” Click
