THE ANGRY INCH
|
 |
Adapted
from the critically acclaimed off-Broadway theater
hit, Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a punk rock,
neo-glam rock musical odyssey. Through a collage
of songs, flashbacks, and animation, Hedwig tells
her life story. Born a boy named Hansel, Hedwig
reluctantly submits to a sex change operation
to marry an American G.I. and get over the Berlin
Wall to freedom. The operation is botched, leaving
her with an "angry inch." Finding herself
high, dry, and divorced in a Kansas trailer park,
she pushes on to form a rock band, The Angry Inch,
and eventually finds the origin of love. Hedwig
and the Angry Inch marks the directorial debut
of John Cameron Mitchell, who also stars in the
title role. Mitchell, along with composer/lyricist
Stephen Trask, created and starred in the off-Broadway
production. Hedwig and the Angry Inch starts August
3 at Landmarks River Oaks Theatre. At press
time, OutSmart was assured that the River Oaks
Theatre staff would be a glam-rock spectacle unto
themselves; also, plenty of Hedwig-related prizes!
