A new record was set on June 30, when $57,000 in college scholarships was awarded to 19 gay, lesbian, bisexual, or trans-gendered (GLBT) students in the Houston area. These awards bring total scholarship funding by the PFLAG/HATCH Youth
Scholarship Foundation
to $187,000 since the foundation was formed in 1997. • Students at the awards ceremony specified study goals as varied as education, business, medicine, music, art and journalism. Enrollment includes a wide range of several 2-year schools as well as The University of Texas, Prairie View University, University of Houston, Grinnell and Stanford. • The Youth Scholarship Foundation is an independent 501(c)3 corporation formed when PFLAG (Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) and H.A.T.C.H. (Houston Area Teen Coalition of Homosexuals) collaborated to provide scholarships to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered youth. Scholarships are available for students pursuing 2-year or 4-year degree programs as well as vocational school certification. • One of the 2001 awards
was named the Gary Van Ooteghem Scholarship in his honor as a founder of the PFLAG/HATCH coalition. This award was funded from interest earned on the Gary Van Ooteghem Endowment Fund, which now amounts to more than $103,000 in principal. • Kevin Davidson, co-founder (secretary/treasurer) of the youth scholarship foundation, emphasized that fund-raising for 2002 scholarships is already under way, as well as a drive to increase the Gary Van Ooteghem Endowment Fund for future awards. Details can be found on websites for PFLAG and for H.A.T.C.H. (www.hatchyouth.org).
