GOLDEN YEAR

The Diana Foundation marked its 50th anniversary on April 5 with its annual variety show at the Warwick. Founded by Charles Herbert and certainly one of the oldest gay-and-lesbian charitable groups in the nation, the Diana Foundation for years raised scholarship funds for High School for the Performing and Visual Arts graduates. In 1980, the group began responding to the AIDS crisis by donating show funds to service organizations—first the Assistance Fund, then others. Over the years, Diana members have no doubt received more attention for the notoriously acid-tongued content of their show and roast than for their generosity. Still, attention must be paid to a group that has raised thousands of dollars for a community always strapped for cash.
