Two Houston activist groups, the Equity Rally, Inc and the Houston Gay and Lesbian Political Caucus, working in conjunction with the StopDr.Laura.com website are spearheading local opposition to Laura Schlessinger by organizing a protest picket on Friday, July 14, 11:30 a.m., at KSEV AM-700 (11767 Katy Freeway) where “Dr.” Laura currently airs her syndicated radio show. “This force is to create awareness in the local population of Houston that bigotry will not be tolerated in on our city’s airwaves. Our ultimate aim is to halt KPRC-TV, Channel 2’s plans to air her television show this September,” reports Dan DiDonato of the Equity Rally. Calling lesbian and gay people “biological errors,” pedophiles and “deviant,” Dr. Schlessinger stridently opposes gay marriage, gay rights to adopt children, and counsels parents to isolate their kids from LGBT people. ISSUES! magazine, proclaiming itself the only national publication to address the entertainment and social needs of lesbians of color, premiered in April 2000. “I want to be the Essence or the Latina for lesbians of color,” states publisher and founder Stephanie Daniels. “Lesbians of color throughout the world are doing remarkable things. I don’t think it’s reasonable to try to squeeze the many and varied works and interests of a global community of lesbians of color into a special issue of a magazine, but the more mainstream lesbian magazines continually do just that. We want to talk about the issues that affect us as lesbians and women of color, from breast cancer to relationships to the workplace to the fun stuff, like entertainment and travel.” Two years ago, ISSUES! was dreamed up during a road trip between Los Angeles and Oakland.
