RALLY MARKS MARRIAGE MILESTONE

On May 17, Houstonians gathered at City Hall to celebrate the historic Massachusetts court ruling that sanctioned same-sex marriages in that state. Among the speakers at the event—organized under the acronym MATE (Massachusetts and Texas Equality)—Rev. Dwayne Johnson of Resurrection Metropolitan Community Church offered this exhortation: “People of Houston, the eyes of Texas are upon you. So what are they going to see? The eyes of Texas will see a people working for justice. They will see a people who love each other, they will see a people who are standing up for rights, for justice, for equality, and most of all for love. The eyes of Texas are upon you, so don’t give up until those eyes see the equality we all deserve.” Reporting: Joyce Gabiola

AUCTION RAISES AIDS FUNDS

A June 17 art auction will raise funds for the Southeast Texas Legal Clinic program that provides free legal assistance to people living with HIV/AIDS. The 6-10 p.m. evening, Art for Caring, at the KeyStar Event Complex will feature original work by local and regional artists, including Harry Power, whose paintings appear in the new Blue Book HIV/AIDS resource guide.

The nonprofit clinic has provided the HIV services for more than 12 years. “We serve people who are already struggling to meet financial and medical obligations,” executive director Jerry Larson says. “Paying for an attorney is simply not an option for them.”

Admission to the event is $5. A silent auction of products and services will also raise funds.
