Letters to the Editor
SHINE ON, SHARON
I just wanted to commend you on your interview
with Sharon Gless [“Gless Glows,” May
2004]. She has long been one of my favorite actresses,
and I even got to meet her when she was a celebrity
grand marshal of the San Francisco Pride parade
a few years back. But I have never learned so
much about her and gotten such a strong sense
of what a great person she is until I read Blase
DiStefano's interview. Kudos!

The article on Sharon Gless is terrific, and
the cover looks really great. Such a long, nice
interview. You really got some great quotes from
her.

MORE 3-D GLEE
I wanted to take a moment to let you know how
impressed I was with the overall layout and presentation
of the OutSmart 3-D issue [April 2004] featuring
k.d. lang on the cover. I expected for the issue
to have a 3-D cover; however, I was amazed that
the format was consistent throughout the entire
magazine! I particularly enjoyed the picture
of the president [“Nice Day for a Right-Wing
Wedding”].

EDITOR’S NOTE: K.d. lang performed on
April 30 and May 1 with the Houston Symphony,
which is represented by Elmore Public Relations.
Just got the 3-D issue … and it is truly
amazing. Congrats on pulling this off (and pulling
it off so well!)!!

CORRECTING THE RECORD
In your April 2004 article “Legacy of
Learning,” you stated Peggy Rudd helped
establish the Houston Transgender (TG) Unity
Committee. This is not the case. Peggy Rudd came
up with the idea of the Unity Banquet and along
with René Fenner’s help started
that annual event. The Houston TG Unity Committee
was the idea of Lilly Roddy. Her idea was to
have all the officers of the Houston groups meet
once a month to share ideas and goals. Desirée
Walton took Lilly’s idea a step further
and formed the Unity Committee. That was back
in 1999. The first banquet the committee hosted
was in 2000 at the Westchase Hilton. Before that
Peggy and René had each local group host
the banquet on a revolving basis.

611: ANOTHER VIEW
As an almost daily visitor to the 611 Hyde Park
Pub for the past four months or so, I must take
exception with Mr. Johnson’s letter to
the editor in the current month’s issue
of OutSmart [“Letters,” May 2004].
The activity at the corner has nothing at all
to do with the 611 Club. I have never seen the
people that hang out at the corner inside the
611. I’ve seen police cars questioning
them at least half a dozen times. It is apparently
a police problem, not a 611 problem. Also, the
611 has a reputation of kicking out anyone caught
smoking grass on the patio. Finally, the bartenders
and barbacks at the 611 are among the best in
Houston, in my opinion. That’s why I’m
happy to call it my “home bar.”
