HOW RADICAL
Two members of the Radical Faeries
community in Nashville, Crazy Bear and Ribbon,
have designated June 5 the inaugural Faerie Godfathers
Day. Proclaimed “throughout
the galaxy” by the Faerie Empress Sassi
Fae, this new holiday honors older gay men for
the valuable role they play in the community.
In Houston, the revived Radical Faerie Circle
plans to pay tribute to its senior members. This
month, we also recognize our favorite godfathers.
These distinguished gentlemen include friend
of the OutSmart staff Damien Yalch, who has work
in the Art League of Houston HIV Outreach Program
exhibition on display through June 30 at Wells
Fargo-River Oak. Yalch is pictured above (l)

OY!
Gay? Lesbian? Jewish? On June 15, stop by Meteor,
bubeleh, for the first gathering of the new Jewish
Gay and Lesbian Social Group. Toast “L’Chaim” to
Sandy Brauer, who is organizing the tribe, sponsored
by the Jewish Community Center Singles Connection.
At the first meeting, couples as well as singles
are welcome. Mazel tov!
GOOD WORKS
Community Gospel Church will host its first
golf scramble on June 19 at World Houston Golf
Course. Michelle Dean and Kelly Gilbert are tournament
directors.
Over Pride weekend, the glamorous SoFonda St.
John and boy patrick will present a 48-hour “totterthon” at
KeyStar Event Complex. The fun will begin with
a show on Friday and conclude on Sunday with
a spaghetti supper dubbed “A Return to
Mel’s Diner.” Proceeds will benefit
Leatherpup Productions and The Assistance Fund
and the Montrose Clinic Women’s Program,
designated charities of the Empire of the Royal
Sovereign and Imperial Court of the Single Star.
Start combing out those hairpieces. Paige Mahogany
and Chloe Douglas of Community Awareness for
Transgender Support have alerted me that they
are making plans for Wig Out, an upcoming fundraiser
for CATS and the Houston GLBT Community Center.
Q-PATROL NEEDS YOU
In late April, a burglary at the community center
resulted in the theft of four Nextel communications
units that Q-Patrol uses on its weekend surveillance
runs through Montrose. The phones are valued
at $250 each, reports Chris Arasin, Q-Patrol
chairman. After such a major blow, the organization
that helps keep our community secure needs support
more than ever. To make a donation: 713/528-SAFE
or QpatrolHouston@yahoo.com.
IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD
Poet Donna Garrett will participate in a Juneteenth
reading, “The Color of Money,” at
Black Heritage Gallery on June 19.
For the Houston Outdoor Group, it’s the
berries this month. On June 19, some members
of the intrepid organization, affectionately
known by the porcine acronym HOG, will journey
to Moorehead Blueberry Farm in Montgomery County
to harvest the fruit. Pickers will include John
Allen, Jon Gray, and Frank Kelley.
Our amigos at GLOBO (Gays and Lesbians Organized
by Orgullo) are particularly busy ahora. They
are presenting Baile Internacional, the dance
at the Guest House Suites/Inn on June 25, and
every Wednesday they are now hosting Latin Nights/Noches
Latinas at Cabo Montrose. DJ Papi spins caliente
music at the weekly evening, co-sponsored by
the Gay & Lesbian Rainbow Pages.
After the parade passes by, Montrose Clinic
will observe National HIV Testing Day on June
28 by offering a free test with results in 20
minutes.
The Chase P.R.I.D.E. team sponsors an exhibition
featuring artists Cristen Cliburn, Richard Fluhr,
McKay Otto, and Elisabeth Smith at the JPMorgan
Chase Heritage Hall through June 30.
