Letters to the Editor

• BLACKBALLED

We received this letter addressed to “LeftOut” columnist Daryl Moore:

You’re a product of the new thought police. Read the book by Tammy Bruce; maybe you’ll understand that it’s OK to have an opinion. Unfortunately, people like you only fuel the fact that having an opinion means something cruel and misleading. You should be ashamed of yourself for making us feel blackballed and that our real concerns and thoughts are unimportant.

• CONDOM-LESS

Nineteen years ago last month, my gay newspaper partner Bruce Brockaway died of what we now call AIDS. His was the first such death in Minnesota. I live in Houston now, and just this month I checked with the Montrose Clinic and the Montrose Counseling Center to see if they had a supply of condoms for high-risk groups like the young bucks at my gay AA center. The answer was “No, see MCC!” at the Montrose Clinic. The answer was “No, see the Montrose Clinic!” at MCC. How sad!

I am convinced that the average salary of a low-level outreach worker, maybe $25,000 a year, would save more lives buying condoms in bulk. Are these institutions more interested in creating jobs and salaries for themselves than in saving lives?
