THE GRADUATES
We all know that the throngs of high school
seniors clutching diplomas this month include
scores of queer youth. We recently caught up
with three, who are all involved in H.A.T.C.H.,
the program for GLBT and questioning young people.
Tom Jurewicz (standing, l) will graduate from
Clear Lake High School, and in the fall he will
enter the Valparaiso University pre-seminary
program. Rowdy Tidwell (standing, r) and Matt
Hudson (seated) will graduate from Westside High
School. Tidwell plans to study psychology at
the University of Texas San Antonio. Hudson is
looking forward to a post-graduation trip to
New York City this summer. Photographed by Yvonne
Feece at a H.A.T.C.H. meeting in April.
DEAR MOTHERS
With same-gender marriage and gay/lesbian families
so much in the news, this year we will especially
honor two-mom households on Mother’s Day,
May 9. Brianna Burchette will celebrate with
her two mommies, Christy Burchette (in the center)
and Sherrie Davis. When they aren’t working
to keep up with their 18-month-old daughter,
Burchette teaches first grade and Davis teaches
pre-kindergarten. They are new members of Houston
Gay & Lesbian Parents, the active group for
families in our community, which plans a horseback-riding
excursion for May 15. Photographed by John Conroy
at West University Elementary.
ON THE ROAD
On May 8, Kirsten Brueggerhoff (r) and Betsy
Odom will ride in the Art Car Parade in their
own creation, El Pollo in the Desert. Odom will
enter the parade—the annual event presented
by the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art—for
the first time. Brueggerhoff is a second-year
veteran. Internet provider Everyones Internet
sponsors the parade on Allen Parkway. At the
photo shoot last month, Brueggerhoff stressed
that El Pollo was a work in progress. But you
can look for the iguana. Photographed by Yvonne
Feece.
