THINK ABOUT THAT TAMALE
In the ’20s, Walter Berryhill served homemade
tamales from a street-corner pushcart in Houston.
Last month, the Anon Group, which runs four namesake
restaurants here and in Calgary, opened Berryhill
Baja Grill in the neighborhood (3407 Montrose
Blvd.; 713/523-8226; www.berryhilltamales.com).
• Steamed in the husk, the five varieties
of tamale still satisfy. Another signature dish:
the crisp fish taco, consisting of fried catfish
wrapped in white-corn tortillas and garnished
with shredded red cabbage and cilantro. Saturated
in warm colors, the interior tries to dispel the
sad memory of Urbana, the previous occupant, where
waiter Mark Kajs was gunned down by his ex in
1998. • Kristine Troger (pictured) owns

WE HEAR…
That a new casual restaurant will open in the
former Crossroads Market space at Westheimer and
Yoakum Boulevard. Expect an announcement by the
local eatery owner soon and a debut sometime over
the summer.

Gay-positive stuff worth supporting
Absolut Vodka and Gallo of Sonoma sponsored the
