THE PILLOWS CASE
Maxine Rothman (l) and Elizabeth Bailey publish
Emerald Pillows, the cheeky new lesbian zine.
Chock full of information and surprises like Alex,
a Rothman-written serial, and a moon-signs column
penned by Lilly Roddy (also the OutSmart astrology
maven), this monthly is a rich resource for women.
Men will like it too.
The website, www.emeraldpillows.com, offers more
content and links to funny and provocative sites
from Chickenhead to AlterNet.
Emerald Pillows is available at no charge at several
locations, including the Houston GLBT Community
Center and Café Artiste (where the Pillows
pair posed at the outdoor mural in this photo
by David Lewis).
PFLAG AD DEBUTS IN YEARBOOKS
In most high school yearbooks, advertisers tend
to range from insurance agencies to auto dealerships
with “Go Team” exhortations. When
students at three area schools open their yearbooks
this month, they will also find an ad from Parents,
Families & Friends of Lesbians & Gays.
With the headline “Mom, Dad … I’m
Gay,” the ad appears in the Bellaire, Sharpstown,
and Shepherd high school annuals.
PFLAG Houston board member Clarence Burton Bagby
launched the effort to place the ad in school
newspapers as well as yearbooks. PFLAG purchased
the ad space.
In April, the 18-year-old local PFLAG group received
chapter of the month honors on the national PFLAG
website.
GROUPS TRAVEL TO AUSTIN WORKSHOP
At least three local groups will participate in
May 16–17 nonprofit workshops presented
in Austin by the Denver-based Gill Foundation.
Representatives of the Houston GLBT Community
Center, Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians
& Gays–Houston, and the Pride Committee
of Houston will travel to Austin for the two-day
Regional Training Institute.
May 9 is the deadline for online registration
at www.gillfoundation.org. The fee is $50 per
person. Gill Foundation staff will present 10
workshops on fundraising, board development, special
events, and other issues.
Established by gay software entrepreneur Tim Gill,
the foundation gave $1,012,500 to 62 organizations
supporting GLBT initiatives and HIV/AIDS programming
in 2003.
