Trickle (Gets) Down

British trip-hop/electronica duo Olive resurface on American shores with their second full-length CD Trickle. It's been three long years since the group stormed into tastier U.S. clubs and up the charts with their now classic single "You're Not Alone." What should have been the group's crossover radio hit ended up lost in the shuffle due to poor promotion at their former label home RCA. The same label is currently set to release Kristine W's much-anticipated second CD. One hopes the forces at work at RCA have learned from past mistakes. But the future looks much brighter for Olive. They now call Maverick Records home thanks to the savvy ears of label founders Madonna and Guy Oseary. The co-partners decided to add the duo to the label roster after hearing material they submitted for The Next Best Thing soundtrack.

Except for the absence of band member Robin Taylor-Firth, Trickle continues where Extra Virgin (their first full-length CD) left off. It's a collection of moody trip-hop flavored tracks created by Tim Kellett and brought to life by the breathy vocal stylings of Ruth-Ann. The pair co-wrote most of the CD's 12 songs, proving once again their songwriting depth and their ability to inject the often lifeless layers of electronic beats with human emotion. The emotional climate is often one of heartache and conflict. Such is the case with the melancholic irony of "Smile," one of the CD's brightest but saddest moments. And on "Trust You," Ruth-Anne's restrained pleas are hauntingly accompanied by Kellett's screeching trumpet and eerie keyboard stabs.

Trickle's first single will be the CD's only cover song, "I'm Not In Love." The classic 10CC song has been remade with speedy drum and bass beats and will premiere in nightclubs this month with a host of remixes. "Trickle" defined means to come or go slowly. In Olive's case, Trickle means a CD with lasting power, one that goes nowhere but in your CD player...for a very long time.

Trickle hits stores May 30. IN MY CD PLAYER: Trickle-Olive (Maverick) Go Deeper Vol. 2-Julius Papp (Maxi/Razor&Tie) Another Late Night‹DJ Dan (Moonshine)
