SPLASH DOWN

Derrick Miles (pictured in a photo by Victor
Zorn) is preparing for Houston Splash, the ninth
annual six-day festival and one of the major
black Pride celebrations in the South. Beginning
April 28, Splash will attract an enthusiastic,
predominantly African American crowd to events
in H-Town and Galveston. Activities include a
slate of club events and the May 1 Urban Assault
Afterhours Ball at the Renaissance Houston. On
May 2 Splash revelers will pour onto East Beach
for the Island Invasion White Party. The Black
Dialogues Series features a breast-cancer screening
workshop and the “Poetic Pleasures” Poetry
Slam. Check the schedule: www.houstonsplash.com
FLAGGED

Mike Alberts (clockwise from top left, in a
photo by Gavyn Aaron), Tim Swann, Elester Stewart,
Marco Roberts, and Toby Black (center) make up
the Fly Boys of Flag Troupe Houston. On April
11, the choreographed flagging quintet will perform
during Bunnies on the Bayou on the Wortham Center
plaza downtown. Flagging has long had a history
in other American gay centers, including New
York and San Francisco. With their revealing
custom-made costumes and precise flag work set
to music, the Fly Boys—together as a group
for a year and a half—are bringing a gay
entertainment tradition home.
PHOTO FINISH

An exhibition of Christopher Olivier’s
photographs on satin will remain on display at
the Art League of Houston through April 17 as
part of FotoFest. The theme of the tenth annual
biennial photography event, presented in galleries,
museums, and other spaces across the city, is “Water” and
its increasing scarcity on the planet (schedule:
www.fotofest.com). The gleaming surfaces of Olivier’s
works certainly have a liquid tone. In fact,
the images are computer circuit boards. (Olivier
is pictured in a photo by Gavyn Aaron.)
