GrooveOut
by Chris Sill

It is without doubt the single most important event on the gay social calendar this year. It will unite people from coast to coast and give them one voice. A single voice with a message that will be heard around the world.

The voice: music
The message: equality
The event: Equality Rocks Concert

On Saturday, April 29, tens of thousands of people will fill Robert F. Kennedy Stadium in Washington D.C. for the landmark Equality Rocks Concert. It is a musical event like no other in that it will send a thundering message for equal rights for gay Americans through the music of top performers, gay and straight. Entertainers confirmed as of press time include: Melissa Etheridge, Garth Brooks, k.d. lang, Pet Shop Boys, George Michael (pictured), and Queen Latifah. Many more are expected to join the historic celebration in the coming weeks. Needless to say this event will sell out! Do not wait to purchase tickets (800-551- SEAT/www.ticketmaster.com).

The Equality Rocks Concert will not be the only party rockin’ the nation’s capital this weekend. Saturday evening, two dances affiliated with the Millennium March will continue the celebration. First is The Premier Dyke Dance and Cabaret featuring DJ Tracy of Liquid/Miami. The dance starts at 9 p.m. at the Washington Plaza Hotel (info: 202-728-7565). Second is The Millennium Dungeon Dance held at Element. Billed as The Premier Leather, Fetish, S&M Event, it kicks off at 10 p.m. with DJ Julian Marsh (info: 202-331-4455/www.clubdesade.com).

Also happening the same weekend (and not by coincidence) is Cherry 5, Washington D.C.’s very own circuit party. With the multitudes of queers running around D.C. this weekend, it’s probably a good thing there are enough parties to hold them all. Saturday’s main event is at the Old Post Office Pavilion with DJ Warren Gluck. On Sunday, DJ Manny Lehman headlines the closing party at Velvet Nation (info: www.cherryfund.com).

And that’s not all. Backbeat Productions and Atlas events team up to present Shoulder to Shoulder, an after-hours dance early Sunday morning at Eleventh Hour with DJ Monty Q. Later Sunday evening DJ Buc spins at Heart to Heart located at Zei Club. Both parties benefit AmFar (info: 202-331-4422). Also on Sunday is Lou Piper’s Exclamation Party with DJ Mark Vallese.

With so many events scheduled on this unprecedented weekend, changes are likely to occur. Keep up with the latest information through info lines and websites.
