TransformationWorks presents the panel discussion called Women Leaping Into Possibilities (W-LIP). Houston Leather Alliance (HLA) has created its first fundraising event, an “Easter Basket Auction,” to benefit Steven’s House. Businesses and individuals are encouraged to decorate and fill an Easter basket with donated wish list items the charity desires. Other donated items can also be procured as well and can be included with the basket. These may be T-shirts, jackets, jewelry, paintings, artwork, travel vouchers, etc. This year, the baskets will be auctioned off at a fundraiser at E/J’s bar, 2517 Ralph St. on Easter Sunday, April 23 at 7 p.m. The money generated from the auction, along with wish list items will go directly to Steven’s House. Donated gift items will go to the highest bidder. Everyone wins! Entertainment is also slated for the event. Russell Simon of Simon & Associates and Clyde Williams were recently named “Best Attorneys In Houston” in the third annual Texas Triangle Round Up Awards. The deadline of May 1, 2000, to submit applications for An Uncommon Legacy Foundation, Inc. scholarships and grants draws near. The foundation awards $1,000 scholarships to outstanding lesbian undergraduates and graduate students. Grants are awarded to 501 (c) (3) organizations and projects which address social, cultural, health, and educational needs and which promote the civil rights and well-being of all lesbians in today’s society and for future generations. Grants awarded generally range in amounts from $1,000 to $5,000. Applications and complete instructions are available on the organization’s website (www.uncomonlegacy.org). An Uncommon Legacy Foundation, Inc. is a nonprofit foundation dedicated to enhancing the visibility, strength, and vitality of the lesbian community.

Community Communications Network (CCN), a new alternative phone company choice, is out to serve the lesbian, gay, transgender, bisexual community of Houston. Deregulation of local telephone service enables CCN to provide telephone technology (the same as Ma Bell) with value-added options and specialized customer care. A percentage of each new or converted customer’s phone plan will be donated directly to a designated organization’s fundraising/activity account. Pacific American Mortgage Company has opened its first Houston branch office. The new staff includes Milton Birdwell, vice president, who has been in the real estate business for over 20 years. Birdwell is an active member of EPAH, the Houston Board of Realtors, a graduate of the Realtor Institute, and has served with numerous local organizations. The company also welcomes Pattie Frazier who spent four years in banking and 17 years in residential real estate services before entering the home mortgage arena. Senior loan officer James L. Sam Garrido, owner of Gary Greene Realtors-Heights, one of the largest gay-owned and -operated real estate companies in Houston, has now become affiliated with Prudential Real Estate Services. Houston Black Tie Dinner announced this year’s Millennium Black Tie Dinner gala will be held on November 11 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Last year, the 1999 black-tie dinner raised $145,000, setting a record that is expected to be surpassed with this year’s event. In related news, the organization elected new board members and officers. The new board consists of Amanda Barhorst, Sandy Clough, Marion E. Coleman, Ralph Grau, Chris Lewis, and Tom Mays. Janine Brunges, founding board member, and Frank Campisi will continue to consult the board as needed, alongside Jason Davis, Betsy Smith, and Gary Teixera, respective emeritus directors. Other officers and board members include Mark Robertson, Matt Krol, Chris Cacioppo, and Parker Witt, all of whom were elected president, vice-president, treasurer, and secretary, respectively. Charles Armstrong will be the organization’s parliamentarian. Carlos A. Reyes Jr. and Gail Swinney will co-chair the black-tie 2000 dinner event.
