GREAT OUTDOORS
Early spring, before the heat moves in, is one
of the best seasons for outdoor dining. These
are a few of our favorite Montrose-area spots
for noshing al fresco:
Baba Yega, 2607 Grant, 713/522-0042
Backstreet Cafe, 1103 South Shepherd,
713/521-2239
Bistro Vino, 819 West Alabama, 713/526-5500
Brasil, 2606 Dunlavy, 713/528-1993
Cafe Express at the Museum of Fine Arts,
Houston, 1001 Bissonnet, 713/639-7300
Daily Review Cafe, 3412 West Lamar, 713/520-9217
Maria Selma, 1617 Richmond, 713/528-4920
Noche Cucina y Bar, 2409 Montrose, 713/529-8559
Riva's Italian Restaurant, 1117 Missouri,
713/529-3450
LOUNGE LIFE
This month, Rickshaw general manager Eric Sterling
and executive chef Michael Potowski open Bambú,
a campy new lounge inside the Euro-Asian restaurant
(2810 Westheimer, 713/942-7272). Amid Indian-inspired
curtains, Peruvian embroidered cushions, and rich-colored
Thai pillows, Sterling offers complimentary hors
d'oeuvres during Wednesday-Friday cocktail hours.
Specialty drinks include the Mambo Mojito.
GO FOR A SANDWICH
Greenberry's Coffee & Tea, becoming a favorite
spot for the community, now serves sandwiches.
Varities include turkey, chicken salad, tuna salad,
and vegetable with a hummus side. Greenberry's
is located at 2311 West Alabama (713/522-7005,
www.greenberrys.com/houston).
WHAT HAPPENED TO LA STRADA?
For months, a scraped-clean lot has been all
that remained of the Westheimer-at-Taft La Strada,
destroyed by fire last year. An announced fall
opening came and went. The brunch crowd despaired
ever enjoying another Bellini-drenched Sunday.
Now Carl Jones, a manager at the second La Strada
(5161 San Felipe, 713/850-9999) reveals that ground
should be broken by the time you read this report.
Why the delay? "They have been trying to get the
building right," Jones says. "We're going to have
the restaurant for a long time. We want to do
it right." Upon completion of the new two-story
building with second-floor outdoor patio, Jones
will return as a manager. "I'm going back over
there, and I'm looking forward to it."
