The top gay music sites: OutSmart's picks
of where to www.getout.com
and www.getdown.org
Navigating the world wide web can be a rewarding but
time-consuming experience. Sometimes it feels like youıve
been sucked into a black hole where there is no concept
of time. Before you know it, two, three, even four hours
have passed and youıre still surfing away! GrooveOut
recently put its own "search engine" to work on the
subject of music. The results were as colorful as a
rainbow flag: from queer radio to queer stores to queer
record labels, plus a whole lot more! By no means is
this list complete ... it's simply offered as a guide
to music-related websites. So log on and leave the navigating
to us.
First stop: Internet Radio. There are a host of listening
sites out there; here are our top picks. Try www.gaywired.com
(click on Internet radio) for a dose of queer radio.
Programs include two talk shows, and one music show.
Tune into Amazon Radio at www.wpkn.org/wpkn/amazon
for women's music broadcast from Bridgeport, Connecticut.
Check site for schedule. Another queer site is www.gaycyn.com,
central New York's Internet radio for gays and lesbians.
If you're looking for more variety and flexibility,
try some of these larger sites. Most are free and broadcast
24-7. The largest may be www.spinner.com. This mega-site
boasts 120 listening channels such as "all girls," "movie
tunes," "dance," "urban divas," and "shagadelic," to
name a few.
For some spicy Latin vibes or Broadway show tunes, go
to www.radio.sonicnet.com. There's always a groove on
at www.grooveradio.comitıs strictly dance and electronica.
Want your own radio show? Check out www.live365.com
and begin your broadcasting career here.
Now that youıve heard the music, where can you buy it?
Here are some gay and gay-friendly sites that provide
an alternative to the obvious choices. Once again www.gaywired.com/gaymusic
offers a good selection of music by gay and lesbian
artists in different genres. The same is true at www.gaymart.com.
For dancing queens the selection is much broader. The
gay-owned www.octaveonhigh.com specializes in '80s high
energy, disco, and house. Also gay-owned is www.perfectbeat.com.
This online store has a large, well-organized inventory,
and caters to the club-savvy buyer. Also check out locally
gay-owned www.recordrack.com
for dance and alternative sounds. The most impressive
site I found was www.satelliterecords.com.
Its extensive inventory of dance music by category (house,
techno, and trance), the availability of sound clips
(almost all titles), and the ease of getting through
the site make it a winner.
GrooveOut's search did not end there. Here we have some
other interesting and entertaining sites to explore:
queer record label Tripnet online at www.tripnet.com;
vote for your favorite gay and lesbian artists at www.outvoice.com;
visit the House of Diabolique to hear gossip and house
music reviews at www.walrus.com~suave; remix your favorite
song with software available at www.cakewalk.com.

OutSmart or to csill@infohwy.com.
